What chemicals are you putting in your pool and what are these pool water chemicals accomplishing? Not maintaining your pool water with the proper levels of chemicals can result in improper balance. Improper balance in your pool water can result in murky water that can cause eye irritation, skin irritation and a breeding pool of bacteria.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there are six chemical levels for your pool that need to be considered. Below is a list of those pool water chemicals and what they do.

  • Cyanuric Acid – Protects chlorine from sunlight and determines the required Free Chlorine level. An ideal reading for outdoor pools is 30- 50.
  • Free Chlorine – A sanitizer which keeps your pool water safe and free of germs.
  • Acidity/Alkalinity – Also known as the PH level, acidity needs to be kept between 7.5 and 7.8 to prevent irritation and protect the pool equipment from eroding.
  • Total Alkalinity –  Helps keep the PH in balance. Levels should be within range of 60-120.
  • Calcium Hardness – Appropriate levels help prevent plaster damage. Aim for 220-350, but lower for pools with vinyl siding.

Testing pool water is pretty easy. It’s as easy as purchasing a pool testing kit from your local pool supply store, filling it to the water levels and add the provided solution, cap it and watch it change color. Matching the color of the water to the colors on the testing kit will guide you to what chemicals should be added to reach an ideal balance.

Checking your pool waters chemical levels should be done at least once a week to keep your pool water crystal clear with little to no scent.
