5 tips to help keep your pool water clear and sparkling year round.
1) Skim Your Pool Regularly
An important step to keeping any swimming pool clear and sparkling, removing organic materials like leaves, insects and other debris is a must.
While your filter will remove smaller particles, large items are often left to sit in your pool and break down. This will cause your pool water dirty and make it cloudy.
Make a habit of skimming the pool regularly to remove larger debris. Once or twice a day should be sufficient.
2) Frequently Check Chemical and Chlorine Stabilizer Levels
Chlorine is used to kill germs and bacteria in pool water, so it plays an important role in keeping the water clear.
Adding chlorine stabilizer keeps the chlorine in the water longer to fight whatever it needs to. Chlorine is quickly oxidized by the sun and stabilizer prolongs the oxidation period.
the chlorine should measure between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million, while the pH level should read between 7.2 and 7.6.
3) Shock Your Pool Water Weekly
You should shock or super-chlorinate your pool once a week to kill any lingering bacteria or algae that may be growing.
Shock treatments are available at your pool supply store and be certain to read the package instructions carefully. Knowing how much shock to add to the water based on your pool size of the pool is very important.
4) Clean Out Skimmer and Pump Baskets.
At least once a week, clean out your skimmer and pump strainer baskets. It’s a simple habit that will help your pool in the long run. Keeping your skimmer abd pump basket clear of debris will help the pools circulation and will also lower your pools chlorine demands.
5) Backwash Your Pool Filter.
If your pool water begins to look cloudy, it is probably good time to backwash your pool filter.
A good rule of thumb is to backwash and rinse your filter about once a week and/or when the psi gauge gets 8 – 10psi over the “just back washed” pressure. If your pool has had a lot more use than normal, it may be necessary to backwash twice a week.
Backwash for around 3 minutes or until the water appears clear
